Assisi has old origins, since the Romans and  became a settlement of the Goths around 545 AD and after by the longobards! Only at the 1000 AD, Assisi become an independent city with a great spread of the monastic Benedestines movement.

The guides are Franciscan friars. They are not always available, but when there is someone available, it is certainly worth your time to arrange your visit to the Basilica with one of these people.
There is a little  charge,  and a donation is appreciated at the end of your visit: Perhaps Euro 10 per person.
