Steve McCurry photography exhibition in Siena

UP TO THE 3DT OF NOVEMBE

Steve McCurry has been a one of the most iconic voices in contemporary photography for more than 30 years, with scores of magazine and book covers, over a dozen books, and countless exhibitions around the world to his name.

Born in a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; McCurry studied film at Pennsylvania State University, before going on to work for a local newspaper. After several years of freelance work, McCurry made his first of what would become many trips to India. Traveling with little more than a bag of clothes and another of film, he made his way across the subcontinent, exploring the country with his camera.

It was after several months of travel that he found himself crossing the border into Pakistan. There, he met a group of refugees from Afghanistan, who smuggled him across the border into their country, just as the Russian Invasion was closing the country to all western journalists. Emerging in traditional dress, with full beard and weather-worn features after weeks embedded with the Mujahideen, McCurry brought the world the first images of the conflict in Afghanistan, putting a human face to the issue on every masthead.

Since then, McCurry has gone on to create stunning images over six continents and countless countries. His work spans conflicts, vanishing cultures, ancient traditions and contemporary culture alike – yet always retains the human element that made his celebrated image of the Afghan Girl such a powerful image.

McCurry has been recognized with some of the most prestigious awards in the industry, including the Robert Capa Gold Medal, National Press Photographers Award, and an unprecedented four first prize awards from the World Press Photo contest, to name a few. MORE INFO: http://stevemccurry.com/

1995 “97/100” 1988 “96/100”

1991 “93/100”

The origin of the name (By Wikipedia)

While the style of making wine from dried grapes has been around almost as long as wine has been made, there are many theories on how the particular name Vin Santo or “holy wine” came to be associated with this style of wine in Italy. The most likely origin was the wine’s historic use in religious Mass, where sweet wine was often preferred.

One of the earliest references to a “vinsanto” wine come from the Renaissance era sales logs of Florentine wine merchants who widely marketed the strong, sweet wine in Rome and elsewhere. Eventually the term “vinsanto” became almost an umbrella name for this style of wine produced elsewhere in Italy. When the Greek island of Santorini came under rule of the Ottoman Empire, the ruling Turks encouraged the island’s wine production of a sweet dessert wine made from dried grapes. Over the next few centuries, this wine became known as Vin Santo and was widely exported to Russia where it became a principle wine in the celebration of Mass for the Russian Orthodox Church.

Other, likely apocryphal, stories on the name’s origin attributes its naming to the work of a 14th century friar from the province of Siena who would use the leftover wine from Mass to cure the sick. The miraculous healing became associated with the santo or “holy” wine and the name Vin Santo was allegedly born.

Another 14th century story involving John Bessarion, a patriarch of the Greek Eastern Orthodox Church. According to legend at the Ecumenical Council of Florence of 1349 a local Florentine wine called Vin Pretto (pure wine) was served. After trying the wine, Bessarion is said to have liked the wine and remarked that it was like Xanthos, alluding to the famous straw wine of Thrace, (though some sources said he described the wine as Xantho or “yellow”). The Florentine locals thought they heard the patriarch describe the wine as Santo and they accordingly started promoting the wine as a “holy wine”. Another theory for the name association often touted is the tradition of starting fermentation around All Saint’s Day and bottling the wine during Easter week.

San Gimignano is one of the most popular historical city in Tuscany, We love to visit the city in a day trip from il Fontanaro, (1 hour and a half driving from il Fontanaro).

The city: San Gimignano rises on a hill (334m high) dominating the Elsa Valley with its towers. Once the seat of a small Etruscan village of the Hellenistic period (200-300 BC) it began its life as a town in the 10th century taking its name from the Holy Bishop of Modena, St. Gimignano, who is said to have saved the village from the barbarian hordes. The town increased in wealth and developed greatly during the Middle Ages thanks to the “Via Francigena” the trading and pilgrim’s route that crossed it. Such prosperity lead to the flourishing of works of art to adorn the churches and monasteries. In 1199 it became a free municipality and fought against the Bishops of Volterra and the surrounding municipalities. Due to internal power struggles it eventually divided into two factions one headed by the Ardinghelli family (Guelphs) and the other by the Salvucci family (Ghibellines). On the 8th May 1300 Dante Alighieri came to San Gimignano as the Ambassador of the Guelph League in Tuscany. In 1348 San Gimignano’s population was drastically reduced by the Black Death Plague throwing the city into a serious crisis which eventually led to its submission to Florence in 1353. In the following centuries San Gimignano overcame its decline and isolation when its beauty and cultural importance together with its agricultural heritage were rediscovered. The construction of the towers dates back to the 11th and 13th centuries. The architecture of the city was influenced by Pisa, Siena and Florence. There are 14th century paintings of the Sienese School to be seen and 15th century paintings of the Florentine School.

BEST OF ALL: A WINE TOUR AT PIETRAFITTA WINERY:

The Farm of Pietrafitta is a wine company, that extends for 300 hectars on hills of San Gimignano and has 40 hectars of vineyards and 20 hectars of olives. Rare wines as Vernaccia of San Gimignano and Chianti Colli Senesi are products of the vineyard and they have been the first Italian wines to be awarded DOC in 1966.

Their production is enriched by red wine of San Gimignano DOC, the rosè and the precious Vinsanto DOC.
To preserve excellence, Pietrafitta chose, from the grape harvest of 2008-2009, to commit oneself to the wine-maker Mario Ercolino and the designer Simonetta Doni: the result is a renewal of the vineyard with the recovery of the old wine cellar, dated by XVI century. Click here to see awards and prizes

Bagamoio is the new combo designed by expert bluesmen Italian Venturi & Paul “Max” Sbaragli. The duo is renewed through the search of the sounds of the instruments and rhythms, aiming to introduce a new sound in the Italian blues scene. The use of percussion and African instruments, masterfully played by Senegalese Dudu Kouate, make up really special songs composed by Paul Venturi, with a mixture of pure traditional downhome, psychedelic and ethnic origin, so charming and inspired to make the songs unique and amazing. The Blues of Venturi acquire experimental tastes but really intriguing and finally away from the 12-bar used as a fetish from the usual Rock Blues, shuffles and the prevailing jive, to delve into music that is especially heart and soul, played without pomposity and presumption, but with simplicity and love.

Focus on the fascinating and multi-faceted planet of the HANDMADE PRODUCTS, in a balanced mix between matter and digital language, avant-garde and centuries-old handicraft traditions.

Once again, craftsmen will be the main protagonists, with their hands magically shaping up glamorous and prodigious objects, future creations, as well as new luxury and style icons.

The exhibition is organized by Firenze Fiera in co-operation with the main institutions and industry associations and is the catalyst event for meetings and new potential business activities

The 55,000 square metres of the exhibiting surface will show endless proposals of furniture, clothes, fashion accessories, gadgets, jewellery, with the participation of the Italian regions and of over 50 foreign countries. A special area will be devoted to the most exclusive food, featuring wine & food itineraries linked with the typical products of the various territories.

A schedule full of side events, live demonstrations, conventions, workshops and events will make shopping and the trade fair experience even more extraordinary, focusing on current and future trends. The main objective is to highlight the new role of handicrafts for the economy, opening new opportunities for young talents, who will have to launch new challenges with the future digital handicraft.
